Deuteronomy 申命记 14 — To be Holy 要圣洁

The children of the Lord must not be like the people of the world. The basic meaning of the Hebrew word translated “holy” is “to be different.” God’s people are different.

主的儿女不能像属世的人一样。“圣洁”的希伯来文原意是“不相同”。神的子民是不同的。

 

Although the Jewish dietary code does not apply to God’s people today (1 Tim. 4:1–5), the spiritual principle remains: we must be a separated and obedient people. The lists of “clean” and “unclean” foods were reminders that the people must learn to distinguish between what God accepts and what He rejects (Lev 11:41–47).

We should glorify God in what we receive and also in what we give (vv. 22–29). A tithe was 10 percent of the produce, which could be used as a sacrifice for joyful feasting before the Lord. A special tithe every third year supported the Levites and helped the poor.

In our receiving and in our giving, we should glorify God and joyfully serve Him. (1 Cor. 10:31.)

  1. The ground for the prohibitions of the eating of certain animals was that Israel was to be holy to the Lord (vv. 2, 21). These special dietary laws were to separate them from socially mixing with pagan idolatrous people and to prevent them from being lured into idolatry. Some of these practices include cutting themselves, making baldness on their foreheads for the dead and boiling a young goat in its mother’s milk (Deu 14:1 and 21). These were the pagan practices of Canaanites. Let’s pray that we separate ourselves from the religious practices of our days so that we can be holy for the Lord.

  1. As a general rule, a tithe of 10 percent of their income is to be set aside as offering to the Lord. Are you faithful in your giving? Let’s pray that we give with a cheerful heart as this is what pleases the Lord (2 Cor. 9:7).

Deuteronomy 申命记 13 — Loving God 爱神

In Moses’ day, as in our day, some people who claimed to have miraculous gifts were not faithful to the Lord. The test is not the person’s ability to perform miracles, for even Satan can do that (2 Cor. 11:13–15; 2 Thess. 2:9–12), but his or her fidelity to the truth of God. Any leader who tempts us away from the Lord and His Word is an enemy and must be rejected.

Success does not determine truth, nor does personal affection (vv. 6–11). We must love truth more than we love people, no matter how painful our differences may be (Prov. 1:10ff.).

Numbers do not determine truth (vv. 12–18). If an entire city turned away from God, that is no reason for us to do so. God will stand with us (Matt. 10:28–42). Our allegiance must be “to the law and to the testimony” (Isa. 8:20).

  1. Who is spiritual? It is not those who prophesy or cast out demons or those who perform miracles. Jesus said ‘I never knew you; depart from me.” (Matt 7:23) Spiritual persons are not those who hide themselves in solitude to pray and read the Scripture. True spirituality are those who obey the Lord and do according to His will (Matt 7:22). Let’s pray that we read the Scripture, understand the will of the Lord and obey accordingly.

  1. The Lord wants us to love Him with all our heart and with all our soul. We shall walk after the LORD our God and fear Him and keep His commandments and obey His voice, and we shall serve Him and hold fast to Him (Deu 13:3-4). Do you love the Lord with your intellect, your emotion and your will? Let’s pray that we love Him with all our beings.

  1. The Lord our God is a jealous God (Ex 20:5). He wants our exclusive love without distraction. If we understand this is the kind of exclusive love between husband and wife, we can understand the love of God. For this reason, God intended to use marriage as a metaphor to describe His love for his people. Let’s pray that we love God above all else.

耶和华我们的神是忌邪(英译:嫉妒)的神(出20:5)。祂要我们专爱祂,无分散之心。我们若能理解夫妻之间独特的爱,就能明白神的爱了。为此,神以婚姻作比喻形容祂对子民的爱。让我们祈祷,叫我们爱神超过一切。

 



Deuteronomy 申命记 12 — Full Obedience 全然顺服

Sometimes we think that a new location is the solution to all our problems, so we change jobs or addresses. It has well been said that a change in geography does not overcome a flaw in character. A change can bring out the best in us, but it might bring out the worst in us.

有的时候,我们认为一个新的环境能解决所有的问题,所以我们选择更换工作或住址。然而,地理位置是无法改变性格上的缺陷。改变或许能带出我们最好的一面,但它也有可能带出我们最糟的一面。

 

Moses warned that the new land could be a place of entanglement (vv. 1–4, 29–32) if the people disobeyed God. Today’s pluralistic society tends to treat all religious faiths alike, but God demands that we worship and serve Him alone.

摩西警告,如果百姓在一个新的地方违背神,这地可能会成为一片网罗(1-4节、29-32节)。今日的多元社会倾向于把所有宗教信仰视为同等,但神要我们唯独敬拜事奉祂。

 

The land would be a place of enjoyment (vv. 5–19) if they followed the Lord, for God would give them safety, rest, and blessing. We receive our spiritual inheritance by God’s grace (Eph. 1:3), and we claim it by faith; but we enjoy it only if we are obedient to His will.

The land was to be a place of enlargement (vv. 26–28) as the people trusted God to give them victory. God wants to enlarge our lives; however, we must be careful that enlargement does not result in estrangement from God. It is folly to gain ground materially but lose it spiritually.

  1. Why did the Lord want to destroy Canaanites and give their land to Israelites? It is because the religions of the Canaanite peoples were both false and extremely filthy. They worshiped a multitude of gods and goddesses, chiefly Baal, the storm god, and Asherah, his consort. The wooden “Asherah poles” (groves) were sex symbols, and the people made use of temple prostitutes as they sought to worship their gods. Since the major goal of the Canaanite religion was fertility for themselves and for their crops, they established places of worship on the mountains and hills (“the high places”) so as to get closer to the gods. They also worshiped under the large trees, which were also symbols of fertility. Their immoral religious practices were a form of magic with which they hoped to please the gods and influence the powers of nature to give them bountiful crops. But Moses pointed out that anything idolatrous remaining in the land was dangerous because it might become a tool for the devil to use in tempting Israel. Paul warns us, “Neither give place to the devil.” (Eph. 4:27) Whenever we disobey the Lord and cherish that which He wants us to destroy, we provide Satan with a foothold in our lives. Israel was even to wipe out the names of the pagan deities, because their names might be used in occult practices to cast spells. Let’s pray that we obey God fully and trust His wisdom and not our understanding.

Deuteronomy 申命记 11 — Decide for Yourself Today 你今天要立志

What God did  神的作为 (1–7).

Moses reminded the people of God’s past mercies by using the phrase “what He did” five times. They did not win the battle in their own strength; God gave the victory. Note that Moses selected two examples of God’s judgment, one from outside the nation (Egypt) and one from within the nation (the rebellion of Dathan and Abiram). The second is more dangerous than the first (Acts 20:28–30).

What God asks 神的要求 (8–21).

He asks that His people obey Him because their obedience is their strength and life (vv. 8–9). They could not prosper in the land without God’s constant care and blessing (Matt. 6:33). The Word in the heart will control the hand, the eyes and the tongue and will protect and direct the household (vv. 18–19).

God’s “I will” is all the promise we need! If we choose to obey, God will bless, even though we may experience trials and burdens. If we choose to disobey, God will still keep His promise and chasten us. If we love Him (vv. 1, 13, 22), we will obey Him, and in that obedience is life.

  1. “You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates,” (Deu 11:18-20) The Lord required us to first keep His words in our mind, heart and soul. We are to bind them on our hands and between our eyes. It means we cannot be satisfied as just hearers of the words but must be doers of the words. Also, we have to teach them to our children. Not only in the classroom but while we sit, walk, lie down and rise up. It means we must have daily conversations about God. Let’s pray that we not only talk, but also walk the talk in our lives so our children can have an example to follow.

(Deu 11:26-28) The Lord requires a response from us. What is your response?

Moses balances the two important themes of law (vv. 1–11) and love (vv. 12–22). Because God loves His people, He gives them His Word to nourish and guide them. We cannot fully experience God’s love for us unless we are obedient to His will. The will of God is the expression of the love of God (Ps. 33:11).

There is no question that God loves His people (vv. 15–18). He has stated it clearly in His Word and has proven it in many ways, especially in giving His Son to die for the sins of the world (Rom. 5:8). We should love God (vv. 12–14) and prove it by our obedient service and our worship. If we love God, we will also love others (v. 19; 1 John 4:7–12).

  1. What does the LORD your God require of you? The answer is immediately given in the second half of the verse: to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, (Deu 10:12) Do you fear God, walk in His ways, love him and serve Him? Let’s pray that we do.

  1. Deuteronomy 10:20 said, “You shall fear the LORD your God. You shall serve him and hold fast to him, and by his name you shall swear.” Do we cling or hold fast to God? Let’s pray that we hold fast to God in all our ways and not trust in any other men or means.

Deuteronomy 申命记 9 — Be Careful How you Think 要谨慎自己的思想

Moses is pointing out the dangers that God’s people must avoid: forgetting God’s goodness (chap. 6), compromising with the enemy (chap. 7), and becoming self-satisfied and complacent after great victory (chap. 8). In this chapter, he warns about a danger that all believers constantly face: the reappearance of an old sin. In Israel’s case, that sin was rebellion against God.

摩西指出了神子民必须避免的危险:忘记神的良善(6章)、与敌人的妥协(7章),并在胜利后的自满自足(8章)。在这一章中,摩西警告信徒他们常常会面临的危险:旧罪重现。对以色列来说,那就是反抗神的罪行。

 

“But we are a new generation!” the people might have argued. “The old generation that died in the wilderness was guilty of rebellion. We are different!”

But Moses warned them. He knew that human nature is the same from one generation to another and that people rarely learn from the mistakes of others. The sin we think we have conquered is the one that will conquer us. (See 1 Cor. 10:12.)

Your greatest fear may come before the battle (vv. 1–3), but your greatest danger may be after the battle (vv. 4–6). If the victory makes you proud, you will fall; but if God’s blessing humbles you, you will succeed. God is able to make you stand (Rom. 14:4).

  1. Sometimes, we might think that the Lord is unfair by taking the lands belonging to Amorites, the Canaanites, and giving them to Israel. However, the Lord said “Do not say in your heart, after the LORD your God has thrust them out before you, ‘It is because of my righteousness that the LORD has brought me in to possess this land,’ whereas it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the LORD is driving them out before you. (Deu 9:4) The statement is repeated again in verse 5. In fact, the Lord already predicted this in Genesis 15. “Then the LORD said to Abram, “Know for certain that your offspring will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs and will be servants there, and they will be afflicted for four hundred years. But I will bring judgment on the nation that they serve, and afterward they shall come out with great possessions. As for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be buried in a good old age. And they shall come back here in the fourth generation, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.” (Gen 15:13-16) That means the Lord has given them 400 years to repent before He punished them. Let’s thank God for His long suffering and let’s pray that we will repent quickly from our sins.

  1. “Know, therefore, that the LORD your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness, for you are a stubborn people” (Deu 9:6). Again, this statement is repeated 3 times. It is not because of Israel’s righteousness but the kindness of God. Let’s thank God because every good and perfect gift that is from the Father of lights in whom there is no variation (Jam 1:17).

Deuteronomy 申命记 8 — Forget Not Your Lord 不要忘记你的主

If we trust Him, God will bring us out (v. 14), lead us through (v. 15), and bring us in (v. 7). Whatever He starts, He finishes (Ps. 138:8; Phil. 1:6).

如果我们信靠神,祂必领我们出来(14节)、引我们经过(15节),并带我们进入美地(7节)。神所开始的事,祂必完成(诗138:8;腓1:6)。

 

As He guides us, God tests us. He tests us by His Word (v. 1). Will we hear every word that He speaks, and will we obey? He also tests us by His ways (vv. 2–9), putting us into situations that help us to know our own hearts. When we become proud, God has to humble us. When we neglect His Word, He must remind us that His Word is our very life.

God tests us by His wealth (vv. 10–20). If we love Him and feed on His Word, we will rejoice in Him and not just in His gifts. In times of prosperity, it is easy to forget the Lord who makes it possible for us to work and earn wealth.

Christians ask God’s blessing on their food before they eat, but verse 10 tells us to bless God after we have eaten. This is one way to remember that God “gives us richly all things to enjoy” (1 Tim. 6:17).

  1. God knows what’s in the hearts of His children, but His children don’t always know—or want to know. Life is a school (Ps. 90:12) and we often don’t know what the lesson is until we fail the test! How we respond to the tests of life reveals what’s really in our hearts, especially when those tests involve the everyday experience of life. The people of Israel were frequently hungry, thirsty and weary from the journey, and it was on those occasions that they became fretful and critical. The devil tempts us to bring out the worst in us, but God tests us to bring out the best in us. When God allows a difficult circumstance to test us, we can either trust Him and become more mature, or we will tempt Him and become more miserable. Let’s believe in the promises of God and rely on the Lord to care for us and bring us through for His glory and our good. Let’s pray that we are willing to accept the sovereign will of the Lord, examine our hearts and grow.

  1. There is peril in prosperity and comfort, for we may become so wrapped up in the blessings that we forget the One who gave us the blessings. For this reason, Moses admonished the Jews to praise God after they had eaten their meals so they wouldn’t forget the Giver of every good and perfect gift (v. 10; James 1:17). Moses spelled out the dangers involved in forgetting that God is the source of every blessing that we enjoy. If we forget God, then success has a way of making us proud (v. 14). Let’s pray that we love the Giver who is so gracious to us rather than love his gifts.

Deuteronomy 申命记 7 — The Chosen Ones of God 神所拣选的

Israel had experienced the wrath of God when they allowed themselves to be seduced by the Moabites (Num. 25). Now they were entering a land where they would be surrounded by pagan worship. There could be no compromise. If the nation were defiled by the awful sins of the Canaanites, it would jeopardize the fulfilling of God’s promise of the Savior. Israel had to be a separated people if they were to bless the whole world (Gen. 12:1–3).

以色列因允许自己被摩押人诱惑,所以遭受了神的愤怒(民25)。现在,他们将要进入一个被异教信仰包围的地方;他们决不能妥协。如果以色列被迦南人可怕的罪行玷污,神赐予救主的应许就会受到影响。以色列若要成为全地的祝福,她就必须分别为圣(创12:1-3)。

 

Moses gives us some motives for personal obedience. To begin with, God has commanded us (vv. 1–5), and we belong to Him (vv. 6–8). He is faithful (vv. 9–11); what He promises, He will fulfill (vv. 12–26).

  1. It is clear that the Lord has forbidden the intermarrying between His people and the gentiles. “You shall not intermarry with them, giving your daughters to their sons or taking their daughters for your sons, for they would turn away your sons from following me, to serve other gods. Then the anger of the LORD would be kindled against you, and he would destroy you quickly. (Deu 7:3-4) The same teaching is also repeated in the New Testament. “Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? (2Co 6:14) Let’s pray that we trust God’s wisdom and obey without compromises.

我们清楚知道神不允许自己的子民和外邦人通婚。“不可与他们结亲,不可将你的女儿嫁给他们的儿子,也不可叫你的儿子娶他们的女儿;因为他必使你儿子转离不跟从主,去事奉别神,以致耶和华的怒气向你们发作,就速速地将你们灭绝。”(申7:3-4)新约也有同样的教导:“你们和不信的原不相配,不要同负一轭。义和不义有什么相交呢?光明和黑暗有什么相通呢?”(林后6:14)请祷告我们要相信神的智慧,要顺服于祂,不作任何妥协。

 

  1. It is clear that the Lord had chosen Israel not because they are greater in number but because the LORD set his love on them. In fact, the reason the Lord chose them because they were the fewest of all peoples. (Deu 7:7-8) Similar teaching is also found in the New Testament. “For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. (1Co 1:26-29) If we are chosen, we are very likely the ones that are foolish, weak and despised by the world. Let’s us be grateful to God and thank Him for His love.

Deuteronomy 申命记 6 — Shema 施玛篇

Verse 4 is called “the Shema,” from the Hebrew word for “hear.” The devout Jew recites it several times a day to affirm his faith in Jehovah. The worship of foreign gods was always a threat to Israel, and this statement of faith reminded the Jews that Jehovah is the true and living God who alone deserves worship and obedience. (See 1 John 5:21.)

第4节被称是“施玛篇”(the Shema),源自希伯来文“听到”一词。虔诚的犹太人每天会将它背颂数次,以此表示他信耶和华。敬拜异教的神对以色列来说一直是一个危险,而这段信心的条例提醒犹太人:耶和华是唯一配得他们敬拜与顺服的永活真神(见约一5:21)。

 

We must love the Lord with all our hearts by keeping all His Word all the days of our lives (v. 2). He cannot accept halfhearted worship or obedience (Eph. 6:6; 1 John 5:3).

我们一定要尽全心爱主,一生谨守祂所有的话语(第2节)。祂不能接受半心半意的敬拜或顺服(弗6:6;约一5:3)。

 

How do we show our love to Him? By hearing and obeying His Word and by sharing it with others. If we love God, His truth will be a part of our normal daily conversation. We also show our love to Him by appreciating His blessings. Times of prosperity become times of temptation if we receive the gifts but fail to thank the Giver (vv. 10–15). (See Phil. 4:11–13; James 1:17.)

我们要如何展示自己爱神呢?即通过听从与顺服祂的话,并与他人分享。如果我们爱神,祂的真理很自然地就会成为我们日常会话的一部分。我们也通过感谢祂所赐下的祝福表明自己爱神。繁荣时光使我们容易陷入享受礼物但却不感谢那位恩主的诱惑(10-15节)。 (见腓4:11-13;各1:17)

  1. To love God and to worship and serve Him is the highest privilege we can have, so when the Lord commands us to love, He is inviting us to that which is the best. But our love for God must involve the totality of the inner person—“with all your heart … soul … and strength.” It isn’t necessary to define and distinguish these elements, as though they were three different internal human functions. In some Scriptures only two are named (Deut. 4:29; 10:12; Josh. 22:5), while in other parallel Scriptures there are four (Mark 12:30; Luke 10:27). The phrase simply means “all that is within you” (Ps. 103:1), a total devotion to the Lord. If the inner person is completely yielded to the Lord and open to His Word as ministered by His Spirit, then the feelings will follow. But even if they don’t, we must still relate to other people as the Lord relates to us. Let’s pray that we truly love God from our hearts.

  1. These words that I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. (Deu 6:6-7) It is important that as parents, we must take the words of God to our hearts first before teaching them diligently to our children. Notice it is the parents’ responsibility to teach God’s words to their children and the method of teaching is within daily conversation not just in classroom. Let’s pray that Christian parents take the words of God seriously and teach them to their children in and through their daily lives.

“我今日所吩咐你的话都要记在心上,也要殷勤教训你的儿女。无论你坐在家里,行在路上,躺下,起来,都要谈论。”(申6:6-7)作为家长要注意的一点是:在殷勤教训儿女之前,首先要将神的话记在自己的心上。教导孩子神的话语的确是父母亲的责任,而教学方法是通过日常生活而不单是教室。让我们祈祷,叫身为基督徒的父母能认真对待神的话,并通过日常生活来教导自己的孩子。

 



Deuteronomy 申命记 5 — Repeating of Ten Commandments 重申十诫

God’s people have three responsibilities when it comes to His commandments: hear them, learn them, and do them (v. 1). When we read the Word of God, we should hear the voice of God as the Spirit speaks to us personally. We must allow the Spirit to teach us God’s truth and then empower us to obey it. The blessing comes in the living of the Word and not in the learning (James 1:21–25).

论到诫命,祂的子民有三个职责:要听从、学习并遵守(1节)。当我们阅读神的话语,而圣灵借此亲自对我们说话的时候,我们应当听从神的声音。我们必须让圣灵教导我们神的真理,并赐予我们能力遵从它。祝福来自行出真道,而不是停留在学习上(各1:21-25)。

 

Most of Deuteronomy is an explanation and application of the commandments repeated here. God’s laws are clear and simple; man’s laws are complex. As we walk in love, we fulfill God’s law in the power of the Holy Spirit (Rom. 8:1–4; 13:8–10).

《申命记》大部分的内容是对诫命再作解释和应用。神的律法明确简单;人的律法却很复杂。当我们凭爱心行事时,就可以靠圣灵的力量完全神的律法了(罗8:1-4;13:8-10)。

 

Beware a mere outward obedience to the laws of God (Matt. 5:20ff.). We must have a true fear of God in our hearts as well as a love for Him (vv. 28–29). “Hear” and “fear” are not contradictory commands; in fact, they belong together (Deut. 4:10).

我们要提防表面上的义(太5:20)。我们必须存有一颗真实敬畏、爱神的心。(28-29节)“听见”和“敬畏”并不是互相矛盾的命令;事实上,它们是并齐的(申4:10)。

  1. The Lord opened the proclamation of His law by reminding the people that it was He who delivered them from the slavery of Egypt (Deut. 5:6; see Neh. 9:9–11; Ps. 77:14–15; 105:23–38; 136:10–15; Isa. 63:11–14). This great act of redemption should have been enough motivation for the people to listen to God’s law and obey it, just as the redemption we have in Christ should motivate us to obey Him.

主以祂如何拯救以色列脱离埃及人的奴役开启了祂律法的宣告(申5:6;见尼9:9-11;诗77:14-15;105:23-38;136:10-15;赛63:11-14)。这伟大的救赎,理当足以成为百姓听从并顺服神律法的动机,就像我们在基督里的救赎一样,应当激励我们顺服祂。

 

  1. Nine of the Ten Commandments are repeated in the New Testament epistles for the church to obey; the exception is the fourth commandment (Deut. 5:12–15) about the Sabbath Day. Why? The Sabbath Day was a special sign between Israel and the Lord (Ex. 31:12–17; Neh. 9:13–15; Ezek. 20:12, 20) and wasn’t given to any other nation (Ps. 147:19–20). Many well-meaning people call Sunday “the Christian Sabbath,” but strictly speaking, this is a misnomer. Sunday is the first day of the week, the Lord’s Day, and the Sabbath is Saturday, the seventh day of the week. The Sabbath symbolizes the Old Covenant of Law: you labored for six days and then you rested. The Lord’s Day commemorates the New Covenant of grace: it opens the week with rest in Christ and the works follow.

It is important to devote one day in seven to the Lord in worship and service. Let’s pray that we take the Lord’s Day seriously and not to be absent for trivial reasons such as sports or recreation activities.

我们要在七天里将一天分别出来单单敬拜和服事神——这是非常重要的。让我们祷告能够认真对待主日,不以微不足道的原因如体育或休闲活动,当缺席的借口。
