4:1-11 — The Temptation of Jesus Christ

All Christians face temptation one way or another. Even the Son of God also faced temptation but He did not sin (Heb. 4:15). So temptation is not sin. Furthermore, we can overcome temptation just like Jesus Christ.

  1. The Temptation of the Body
The first temptation for Jesus is to put his physical need ahead of his spiritual need. The world will do all it takes to survive whether it is biblical or not. Yet Jesus quoted Duet 8:3 that man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD. We must trust God and his provision rather than our own understanding.

  1. The Temptation of the Will 意志的试探 (4:5-7)
The devil quoted Psalm 91:12 to test Jesus’ will to see whether Jesus fully trusted God. That is why Jesus replied with Deut. 6:16 that you shall not test the LORD your God.

  1. The Temptation of the Desire
Lastly, the Devil promised Jesus all the world’s glory, pleasure and attractions if Jesus would worship him. The real temptation rests in the desire of the heart. Do we truly desire God or the pleasure of the world? Again Jesus quoted Scripture that you shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve (Deut. 6:13).

Praying the Scripture

  1. All Christians face temptation and temptation is not sin. Jesus was tempted yet without sin. Giving in is sin. James said that each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire (James 1:14). What desires of your hearts that is so strong that we will sin to get it? Let’s pray that God will open our eyes.

  1. In the second temptation the Devil quoted Scripture. Yes Devil can and will quote the Scripture. Yet he miss-quoted the Scripture. Therefore, proper interpretation of the Scripture is very important. Do you interpret the Scripture rightly? Pray to God that we will diligent interpret His Word rightly and not to be tempted.

  1. The Devil tempted Jesus three times and three times Jesus used Scripture to fend off the temptation. Do we know the Scripture enough to fend off the temptation? The way to victory is to know the whole counsel of God.  James 4:7 states, “Submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

3:13-17 — The Commission of the King

  1. The King being baptized by John

Jesus not only took our sins away but imputed to us his righteousness when we believe in Him (2 Cor. 5:21). Here is the evidence Jesus fulfilled all his righteousness on earth for us since He himself does not need to baptize or repent of any sin because He is sinless (1 Pet 2:22).

  1. The King being anointed by the Holy Spirit
After Jesus was baptized, as he went up from the water, the heavens were opened to him, and the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him. This is the confirming sign was that He was the Messiah (John 1:33). This anointment is also an official commissioning by the Holy Spirit for his kingly ministry just as Isaiah anointed by the Spirit to serve (Isa 61:1).

  1. The King being confirmed by the Father
All the members of the Trinity participated in Jesus’ baptism. The Son confirmed His kingship by fulfilling all righteousness and the Spirit confirmed His right of Messiahship by resting on Him. Finally, the Father confirmed His Messiahship by saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.”

Praying the Scripture

  1. Jesus Christ not only takes our sins away, he adds to us His righteousness. Jesus is perfectly holy and righteous so he does not need to repent or to be baptized. The reason for His baptism is “to fulfil all righteous.” The righteousness is not for Himself but for us, so that he can credit to us his righteousness (2 Cor. 5:21). Let us thank Him not only because he wipes us clean but He gives us His white garment which is His righteousness.

  1. After Jesus was baptized the Spirit of God descending on Him. This is the anointing of the Holy Spirit. In the Old Testament anointment means God commissioned them (kings and priests) for ministry. Here we see God anointing Jesus for his ministry.

  1. The Father testifies after Jesus’ baptism is clear evidence of His Messiahship. Therefore, we need to obey Jesus and worship Him.

3:7-12 — The Baptism of the King

  1. The Baptism of John
John’s Baptism is the baptism of repentance. True repentance will have genuine works to demonstrate the change of heart. James points out, “Faith without works, is dead” (James 2:17).

  1. The Baptism of Holy Spirit
Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit will come and He will be with believers forever. At Pentecost and during the initial formation of the church, the promised Holy Spirit did come upon the disciples, baptizing them and placing them in the body of Christ. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is to place believers into the body of Christ. 1 Cor. 12:13 states clearly, “For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free.”

  1. The Baptism of Fire
The preceding and following verses (10, 12) John clearly uses fire to represent judgment and punishment.  In verse 10, the text said axe is laid to the root of the trees and that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. And verse 12 said that He will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. Unquenchable fire is the description of the burning Hell. So the baptism of fire refers to the judgment of hell.

Praying the Scripture

1. True repentance will have genuine works to demonstrate the change of heart. Is your daily life reflecting your repentance heart? Pray that we have the fruit of repentance to authenticate the heart of repentance.

2. The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is the placement of Christians into the body of Christ. So how is your body-life? Do you stir up one another to love and good works? Have you neglected to meet together and encourage one another (Heb. 10:24-25)?

3. “The Baptism of fire” means judgment. If we are not baptized by the Holy Spirit we will be baptized by fire. If we are not saved we will be damned. Let’s examine our hearts to see if we are in the faith (2 Cor. 13:5). Let’s pray for the enlightenment of the Holy Spirit to see our true condition.

2:13-23 — The Prophecies of the King

Matthew lists 3 prophecies fulfilled in the life of the King.

  1. The King’s Prophecies I fulfilled
The first prophecy “Out of Egypt I called my son” is from Hos. 11:1 which speaks of God leading Israel out of Egypt in the Exodus. This is a pictorial prophecy, rather than a verbal one. These pictorial prophecies are prophecies in picture rather than verbal words.

  1. The King’s Prophecies II fulfilled

Second pictorial prophecy fulfilled was taken from Jeremiah 31:15in which Jeremiah was speaking of the great sorrow that would soon be experienced in Israel when most of the Israelite would be carried captive to Babylon.

  1. The King’s Prophecies III fulfilled

The third prophecy mentioned here was not recorded in OT. Since Matthew speaks of the prophets, plural, it seems that several prophets had made this prediction verbally, but it was not recorded in the Old Testament. Other prophecies predicted but not recorded in the OT include Jude 14-15. New Testament example of Jesus’s command but not recorded in NT is Acts 10:35. “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

Praying the Scripture

  1. God’s plan was to give His Son to us for our salvation yet Satan’s plan was to kill the Baby Jesus so that the plan of Salvation will be thwarted. However, the Lord’s counsel shall stand, and He will accomplish all my purpose (Isa 46:10). This proves the sovereignty of God. Let us cast all your anxieties on Him who care for us (1 Pet 5:7).

  1. The Lord said that I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done(Isa 46:10). The Word of the Lord is sure. Let us pray that we put our trust in the Word of the Lord completely.

  1. Satan, the adversary (1 Peter 5:18), is always opposing the plan of God. Are you also opposing the plan of God? Pray for obedience and not opposition to the Lord our God.

2:1-12, The Worship of the King

After establishing Jesus’ royal genealogy and His virgin birth, Matthew introduced the testimony of the magi who were the powerful kingmakers from the east traveled a great distance to give homage to the infant Jesus (2:2).

  1. The Arrival of Magi

Magi were known as wise men because of their knowledge of mathematics, science, astrology, and they have strong political influence. That’s why they can have access to Herod on arrival. After Daniel’s interpretation of Nebuchadnezzar’s dream he was also appointed as ruler over Babylon and chief magi over all the wise men (magi) (Dan. 2:48).  Some magi were strongly influenced by Judaism, quite possibly by some of the prophetic writings.

  1. The Adoration of the Magi

Matthew is careful to say that the magi worshiped Him, that is, the Child, not His mother. It was also to Him that they presented their gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh. The gifts were an expression of worship, given out of the overflow of adoring and grateful hearts.

  1. The Abandonment of the Magi

With their mission of worship and adoration completed, the magi left Bethlehem. But having been warned by God in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their own country by another way.

Praying the Scripture

  1. We read from this passage that even the Gentile magi travel great distances to pay homage to the King Jesus. How far did you travel on Sunday to worship our Lord? Is distance an excuse for you not to go to church? What is the attitude of our hearts compared to these magi from the East? Please respond to God in prayer.

  1. These Magi from the East gave their best: gold and frankincense and myrrh. What did you bring to worship the king on Sunday?

  1. It is clear that the magi worship Jesus alone, not his earthly mother. Jesus said that whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother. (Mat 12:50) Are you doing the will of God? Pray response to God in prayer.

1:18-25, The Arrival of the King

The Virgin Conception Realized
Jewish betrothal was as binding as marriage although physical union had not yet taken place. Premarital sexual relationships were regarded as adultery and stoning was the legal prescription for this sin (Deut 22:23).

The Virgin Conception Confronted
“A righteous man” is a Hebraism suggesting that he was a true believer who carefully obeyed the law. Joseph was not only a righteous man he was also a gracious man who did not want to publicly humiliate Mary but resolved to divorce her quietly.

The Virgin Conception Clarified
While Joseph was considering this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream to clarify the situation and told him to take Mary as his wife; for that which has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit” which testifies to the virgin birth of Jesus.

The Virgin Conception Prophesied
At this point Matthew explains that Jesus’ virgin birth was a prophecy fulfilled according to the Old Testament (Isa. 7:14).

The Virgin Conception Accepted
Joseph obeyed what the Lord commanded him. This fact alone indicates the depth of Joseph’s godliness. We doubt seriously whether Joseph can fully comprehend what is about to happen to him yet he is totally committed to God’s command.

Praying the Scripture

We thank God for His faithfulness for the Lord said, “my word that goes out from my mouth will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it” (Isa 55:11).

Joseph is not only a righteous man but also a gracious man. We pray that we will not be legalistic but gracious to the people who sin.

Joseph is totally committed to the Lord even though we doubt whether Joseph fully understands the Virgin Birth. Can we trust God even though we cannot fully understand His plan?

1:1-17, The Genealogy of the King

The gospel of Matthew starts with the genealogy of Jesus. The genealogy is not just a record of the origin of Jesus. It provides us with a glimpse into God’s Saving Grace, God’s Sovereignty and God’s Salvation. This genealogy can be divided into three parts.

God’s Saving Grace
A careful examination of the genealogy from Abraham to David, we will discover it includes Tamar and Ruth, a sinner and a Gentile. Why should they be included in the Lord’s genealogy? This gives us a glimpse into the grace of God who cleansed them and saved them from their sins.

God’s Sovereignty
The second part of the genealogy runs from David to the exile in Babylon. These were the names of kings from the southern kingdom. Although Judah’s history witnessed spiritual degeneration resulting in exile, God still preserved a royal seed in succession to David and looked forward to the coming of Jesus Christ. This is the sovereignty of God despite Jewish rebellion.

God’s Salvation
The third part of the genealogy runs from the time of exile to Jesus. Just as the redemptive history, it opened with redemption from Egypt, so it closes with salvation from Babylon. God did not abandon his people but saved them and brought them back. This illustrates God’s saving work in the world.

Praying the Scripture

Our LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love (Ps. 145:8). Is there any sin that you need to confess before him?

No matter how difficult your situation is, our Lord is sovereign and powerful. He can bring good out of the situation you are in. So let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Heb 4:16).

Our God is a God of salvation (Ps. 68:20). So salvation is from the Lord. Are you thankful for your salvation? Read Eph. 2:1-23 to remember what kind a person we once were.
