Matthew 马太福音 10:5-15 — Instructions for First Mission 首个任务的指示
The instruction Jesus gave the apostles in the beginning was to go to the lost sheep of Israel because according God’s plan, Israel will be the first to receive the good news. However, we need to realize that the instructions are meant for the twelve Apostles being sent out not for all Christians. Despite that we can still learn from this first mission.
- Clear Message
Many fail to understand and receive the gospel because they have not presented accurately and clearly. The central message of the kingdom is the message about Jesus the King and God’s sovereign provision for man’s salvation.
- Confirming Credential
Jesus gave confirming signs for His own ministry, and now He gives the twelve Apostles the authority to do the same. These include “heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons” (10:8). Furthermore the ministers of God are to be supported by God’s people, because “the worker is worthy of his support” (10:10).
- Concentrate on those who are the receptive
God calls His servants to present the gospel to all but focus only on those who are receptive. God’s mandate is that we should not to spend undue time on those who persist in rejecting the gospel.
Praying the Scripture
- The twelve Apostles are instructed to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand,” (4:17) the same message Jesus preached when He started His early ministry. Do we preach the gospel of repentance or gospel of wealth, health and prosperity? Is the message in evangelism clear?
- Jesus gave the twelve apostles the authoritative to heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers and cast out demons. These are signs of apostles (2 Cor. 12:12). So do we have apostles today?
- Jesus said, “If anyone will not receive or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet (10:14). When Israelites return from a Gentile land, they would shake off their feet. To shake the dust off their feet means to treat the people like Gentiles-whom most Jews considered to be out of God’s reach.
9:35-10:4 — The Mission of the Church
This is the second major disclosure of Jesus Christ in the gospel of Matthew as Matt 9:35 repeats 4:23 in emphasizing Jesus’ teaching, preaching and healing ministry. It serves as inclusion. Matthew already showed us the authoritative words and authoritative works. Now he is showing us the task, the need and the call of continuing His teaching and works. That is the mission of the church.
- The Task of the mission
Just as in Matt 4:23 Matthew is showing us Jesus went about teaching, preaching and healing. He is preparing the ground to show the need for mission by repeating the statement.
- The Need of the Mission
As the great Shepherd of Israel, Jesus went around and saw the people of Israel being harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. He had great compassion for them and He instructed the people to pray earnestly to the Lord to send out laborers into his harvest.”
- The Call to the mission
Because of His compassion Jesus went ahead to appoint the twelve Apostles and sent them out to continue His work of ministry. Here the names of the original twelve Apostles were given.
Praying the Scripture
- Jesus saw the crowds like sheep without a shepherd and He had compassion for them. Can you see the people around you are like sheep without shepherd and have compassion for them just like Jesus? Pray that we had compassionate hearts like Jesus.
- When Jesus saw the need of the people He did not ask them to go but pray. Why? It is because the job of pastors and missionaries are not meant for everyone but those who are called by the Lord. Our job is to pray to the Lord to send His men to the fields. Do you bring the need to the Lord? Are you praying for pastors and missionaries?
- This is the first time the word apostle is used on the twelve. They were personally chosen by Jesus Christ. Apostles are very unique and they have special calling, authority and signs (2 Cor. 12:12).
9:33b-34 — Two Responses to Jesus’ Power
- Response of Religionists
Praying the Scripture
- Which of these two groups do you belong to? We have heard Jesus’ authoritative words and see His authoritative works. What is your response? Are you marveled like the multitudes or do you bow down and submit to him as Lord and Master?
- Any person who praises Jesus but rejects Him as Lord and master is just as damned as the person who denounces and rejects Him. Jesus Himself said that He is the creator and master of our lives. If we do not accept His words, we deny Him. What about you? Is He Lord and master of your life?
9:27-33a — Miracles of Sight and Sound
As Matthew continues to present the 3rd set of miracles that demonstrate Jesus’ claim to messiah-ship, he shows Jesus’ power to restore sight to the blind and speech to the dumb. In raising the ruler’s daughter from the dead, the Lord demonstrated His ultimate power over death. In healing the woman with the hemorrhage (9:20–22), and now healing the blind and the dumb/deaf men, He continued to demonstrate His power over the physical evils and corruption that sin produces. Through the miracles of restoring sight to blinds and speech to dumb the Messiah again affirmed His ability not only to restore life to a body but also to restore function to any of its body parts.
- The Healing of the Two blind men 医治两名瞎子 (9:27-31)
The healing of the two blind men is a fulfillment of the messianic prophecy of Isa 35:5–6, “Then will the eyes of the blind be opened … and the mute tongue shout for joy.”
- The Casting out of the demon from a young man 从少年人赶出鬼魔 (9:32-34)
The man’s muteness was probably caused by demon possession (4:24) and he may well have been deaf as well. Jesus cast the demon out at once. The Greek verb “cast out” has the notion of a forcible expulsion.
Praying the Scripture
- The two blind men trusted Jesus for healing, just as the lost must trust in Him for salvation. What about you?
- Jesus healed the blind men – “according to your faith be it done to you.” It should be understood in the sense that “since you have faith” rather than thinking of strict proportionality (the meaning is not “the more faith, the better the result”; cf. 8:13). Some versions translate it as, “as you have believed, so let it be.” Do you believe?
- The authority of Jesus is clearly demonstrated by His casting the demon out at once. It is unlike many so called exorcists who take days and nights casting in the name of the Lord in vain. James said, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (Jam 4:7) Do you submit to God?
8:28-34 — Jesus’ Power over the Supernatural
Demons are fallen angels (2 Kings 19:35; Ps. 103:20; 2 Pet. 2:11).
They have superior intelligence (Ezek. 28:3–4), superior strength (Mark 5:4; Acts 19:16), superior powers to perform “signs and false wonders” (2 Thess. 2:9). Yet they are under the sovereign power of God. James said we have the protection of God and “the evil one does not touch him” (1 John 5:18).
- Coming of the Demon possessed
There were two demon-possessed men who came out of the tombs to meet Jesus. Demonization may be defined as a condition in which one or more demons inhabits and gains control over a human being.
- Confrontation with the demon possessed
The demons acknowledged that there as a future, divinely-appointed time when Jesus would judge them and punish them with eternal damnation. Their eschatology (understanding of the end times) was correct (James 2:19). Jesus did not reply them so they begged to be sent into the pigs which were unclean among the Jews.
- Casting Out of the Demons
In Mark it is revealed that there was a legion of demons in the two men. With a word: Begone! Jesus cast out the entire legion of demons. Jesus’ supreme authority and power over Satan is clearly seen in this incident.
Praying the Scripture
- Many are afraid of Satan, but Jesus said, “Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell” (Mat 10:28). Do you have misplaced fear? Pray that God will open your eyes to see the truth.
- The number of demons that possessed the men was described as “Legion, for we are many” (Mark 5:9). Yet with one word, Jesus cast them all out! Why are we afraid of Satan and not Jesus Christ?
- Jesus’ authority over the supernatural is clear. Let’s worship Jesus Christ alone.
- Forgiveness of sins
The forgiveness of sin is a distinctive characteristic of the Christian faith. Matthew has been focusing on various miracles of the Lord, all of which are meant to demonstrate Jesus’ divinity. He has shown us Jesus’ authority over sickness (8:1-15), Jesus’ authority over nature (8:23-27) and Jesus’ authority over the supernatural (8:28-34). Here, he demonstrates Jesus’ authority over sin. Four men bring their paralytic friend to see Jesus who heals him by saying, “your sins are forgiven.” The sickness was apparently due to his sins.
- Fact of the authority to forgive
The scribes accused Jesus of blaspheming because only God can forgive sins (Isa. 43:25; Mic. 7:18–19). Knowing their thoughts Jesus said, “For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Rise, and walk’? But in order that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” Jesus demonstrated beyond doubt his ability to forgive sin.
- Fear, reverence and awe of Jesus Christ
The multitudes saw this and they were filled with awe, and glorified God. They responded to Jesus’ authority with worship.
Praying the Scripture
- What a blessing to have friends such as these four men who brought the paralytic to Jesus. Are you pointing your friends to Jesus?
- Sometime we need to “carry” our friends to Jesus. Are you willing to be carried to Jesus? Is there someone you need to “carry” to Jesus?
- The authority to forgive is a clear sign that Jesus is God because only God can forgive (Isa. 43:25). Are you willing to humble yourselves before Jesus and ask for forgiveness?
In the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew showed us Jesus’ authoritative teaching. After which Matthew showed us Jesus’ authority over sickness (8:1-15), nature (8:23-27) and the supernatural (8:28-34). This flow was then interrupted by the false disciples who wanted to follow Jesus without commitment (8:16-22). Now in 9:9-13, Jesus shows them what a true disciple looks like.
- The Call of the disciple
Matthew was a custom tax collector and was despised and hated by the Jews who considered tax collectors sinners. Yet Jesus called Matthew to be His disciple.
- The Commitment of the disciple
After receiving the call, Matthew decisively gets up and follows Jesus. He probably made a great sacrifice since tax collectors were usually wealthy. A fisherman might go back to his fishing, but the tax collector could not return to his old job as others would eagerly take his place. He couldn’t get another job either since no one would hire a former tax collector. Matthew’s response indicates a total trust in Jesus.
- The Case for the disciple
When the Pharisees question Jesus, He answers that God desires mercy, and not sacrifice. He then explains that He came not to call the righteous, but sinners.
Praying the Scripture
- Jesus desires mercy – He came to call sinners and wants us to do likewise. What is your attitude toward sinners? Do you have the attitude of the Pharisees or Jesus?
- Matthew’s response to Jesus was amazing. He gave up a lucrative job and made a decision he could not turn back on. His commitment was unquestionable. What about you?
- Jesus said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.” Again He said, “I desire mercy, and not sacrifice. For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.” What does he mean by that? What is your response?
In the previous passage, Jesus demonstrated true discipleship by calling Matthew the sinner (tax collector) who responded with total trust by making a ‘no-turning-back’ commitment to Jesus. Here, Jesus is asked a question about fasting. It may well be that John’s disciples were fasting on a day that the followers of Jesus were feasting (cf. Mark 2:18). This is typical of religious people. They practice all sorts of rituals and ceremonies, but haven’t the least idea why they do it. But Jesus is clear that his coming marks a discontinuity with legalism.
- The Question about Fasting
The only required fasting in the OT is on the Day of Atonement (Lev. 16:29–34). However, the Pharisees fast every Monday and Thursday, so they are surprised that Jesus’ followers do not practice the same thing.
- The Question about Commitment
Jesus responds saying they should not mourn while He is with them. The first lesson we learn here is that fasting is linked with mourning. Secondly, their commitment is to Jesus rather than rituals. He said, “The guests of the bridegroom cannot mourn while he is with them.”
- The Question about legalism
Jesus uses two illustrations which clearly require a break from the old legalism. Jesus is not here to reform the law but to show the new way of the Messiah.
Praying the Scripture
- Many Christians are so accustomed to legalism. They feel they must do something in order to ‘feel’ God or be godly. But God looks at the inside rather than outside. The internal is more important than the external. He wants our desires, affections and love more than merely doing something religiously. So what do you do to draw near to God?
- Fasting is not commanded in the New Testament as a religious duty. Christians do not fast to get the attention of God. This is meritocracy. This is NOT grace. The reason Christians fast is because they are burdened and sad and they want to humble themselves before God and seek Him in prayer. They read scripture and pray so intensely that they forget about food. Would you fast, humble yourselves and seek God with all your hearts if you face difficulties in life?
After showing us the authoritative words of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew show us His authoritative works. There are a total of nine miracles presented in three groups of three miracles each (8:1–17; 8:23–9:8; 9:18–34). Here, Jesus begins on the last set of miracles, healing a woman and raising a child from dead.
- The Healing of a woman with Haemorrhage
There was a woman who had suffered from a discharge of blood for 12 years and it was considered unclean according to the OT. The woman came up behind Jesus thinking, “If I only touch his garment, I will be made well.” Jesus said to her, “Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well.“
- The Healing of the Ruler’s daughter
When Jesus came into the official’s house, there were the flute-players who were professional mourners. The daughter was already dead. Jesus said to them, “Depart; for the girl has not died, but is asleep.” He proceeds to raise her from dead. This news went out into all that land.
While faith is not mentioned explicitly, it is unmistakable. Both the woman and the father of the child had great faith in Jesus shown in the act of touching His garment and kneeling before Him.
Praying the Scripture
- The ruler was not only a synagogue official, but was the chief ruler (archon) of the synagogue – the highest ranking religious official in Capernaum. He came kneeling before Jesus; his humility clear. Do you kneel before Jesus?
- The woman with haemorrhage was determined, despite her uncleanness, to seek help from Jesus. Her faith in Jesus was rewarded. Do you trust Jesus with your problems?
- When Jesus arrived at the ruler’s house, the daughter was dead. But when Jesus said that the girl had not died but was asleep, they laughed at Jesus and did not believe. Do you believe Jesus’ words or are you laughing at Him?
After Jesus’ authoritative teaching on the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew recorded a number of miracles which demonstrated this authority. In other words, the Sermon on the Mount provided us with Jesus’ authoritative words, and now we see His authoritative deeds. The first set of three miracles showed us Jesus’ authority over sickness. Here, the second set shows us Jesus’ authority over nature.
- The Panic
As Jesus and His disciples were crossing the Sea of Galilee in a boat, a great storm arose at sea. The winds blustered and the waves tossed the boat about like a cork in water, yet Jesus slept soundly. The disciples woke Him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing!” Like the Sea of Galilee, life is full of uncertainties; no one can sleep easy unless they rest in the Lord.
- The Power
Jesus rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, saying, “Hush, be still” (Mark 4:39). The winds stopped, the waves ceased, the air cleared, and the water stilled. Jesus has complete power over nature.
- The Pondering
Praying the Scripture
- Do you believe Jesus has power over nature? Does your Jesus have authority only in your religion or do you believe He has power over your surroundings?
- Jesus said to them, “Why are you afraid, O you of little faith?” It is obvious that we have little faith when we worry or fear. Pray that our faith will grow, so we can live a life that is glorifying to Him.
- If Jesus can calm the storm at sea he can calm the storm in your life. Do you believe in Him?
